Florida Lawmakers Make Their Move, Offering Gambling Expansion Bill
Florida lawmakers have been wining and dining with Las Vegas casino executives for the better part of this year. On Wednesday, the executives started to receive their payback when a bill was filed that would make the Sunshine State one of the major casino gambling destinations in the US.The bill is only the first step in what is expected to be a long process towards full scale Vegas-style casino gambling in Florida. The legislation calls for the creation of the Florida State Gaming Commission, which would oversee all regulations and expansion of gambling in the state moving forward.The bill also would bring relief to a state budget deficit that is amongst the worst of any state in the country. The promise of billions of dollars in tax revenue, along with thousands of temporary and permanent jobs is what is driving the Republican-led Legislature to push the casino resort gambling bill.Analysts have assumed that full-scale gambling was in the cards in Florida since Genting bought the current home of the Miami Herald. The building will be the future home of Resorts World Miami, another in the growing list of luxury resorts by Genting. The company is based in Malaysia, but has spent much of the past decade expanding across the world. Miami is one of the two destinations the bill would authorize for casino resort licenses. Broward and Miami-Dade Counties are already considered to be the gaming center of Florida, and the destination resorts would only add to reputation Miami has of being one of the top tourist destinations in the US.Broward has the Seminole Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood that offers blackjack, baccarat, poker, and Incredible Hulk Slots. The Seminoles are watching the state closely when it comes to gambling expansion. If the state passes the gaming bill proposed today, it could lead to a legal battle with the tribe. Seminole lawyers have maintained that if the state adds new casinos, the compact that was signed last year between the state and the Seminoles would be voided.Las Vegas Sands would seem to be the other gaming company to make out if the gambling bill passes in Florida. LVS CEO Sheldon Adelson has been pitching casino resorts to Governor Rick Scott since Scott was elected. One of the first trips Scott took last year when he was elected was on a private plane that is owned by Adelson.Experts still believe that a bill passing this year to expand gambling would be a reach. There is plenty of opposition in Florida to more gambling, especially in Central and Northern Florida. Currently, lawmakers are only looking to add destination resorts in Broward and Miami-Dade. He introduced the game to his poker buddies in Danemark
and the game of Five Card Draw was dead and buried for ever.
Johan just returned from his seventh trip to The Sin City. “It’s the same routine every time”
he says. Straight in to the Hotel Mirage
dumping off the suitcases
and heading straight to the poker room.
He never gambles in the casino. Just plays true poker
and spends the majority of his vacation time playing tournament poker. To him
this is the best holiday any unmarried guy can have.
His goal every time is to win the equivalent of airplane and hotel costs. He has managed that the last four times
but haven’t won a big tournament yet.
